{"id":3541,"date":"2024-02-28T11:10:15","date_gmt":"2024-02-28T01:10:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/savethebilbyfund.org.au\/26\/?p=3541"},"modified":"2026-07-28T11:10:26","modified_gmt":"2026-07-28T01:10:26","slug":"poop-scat-dna","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/savethebilbyfund.org.au\/26\/poop-scat-dna\/","title":{"rendered":"Poop, Scat, DNA!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the end of 2023, you so graciously helped us raise funds for a critically important research project: A National Bilby Genome Project.<\/p>\n<p>The bilby was genetically profiled for the first time in 2021, which gave us the genome. That is the entire set of genetic instructions for making and growing a bilby. The bilby genome is incredibly complex \u2013 with 3.7 billion pieces of genetic code.<\/p>\n<p>We used to have to invasively take a sample of tissue from their ears to profile their DNA; which is mighty hard considering they are nocturnal and spend most of their days deep underground. So we had trouble finding and capturing them.<\/p>\n<p>However recent technological advances mean we can now extract DNA from bilby droppings\/poop\/scat. This is much easier to find! We will be collecting scat samples from wild bilbies as well as those in managed sanctuaries.<\/p>\n<p>This is a national project, and we are working together with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Greater Bilby National Team<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sydney.edu.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The University of Sydney<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/deadlyscience.org.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Deadly Science<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/taronga.org.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Taronga Conservation Society of Australia<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The Greater Bilby Management Subcommittee<\/li>\n<li>The Greater Bilby scientific working group<\/li>\n<li>Rachel Paltridge, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indigenousdesertalliance.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indigenous Desert Alliance<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbca.wa.gov.au\/\" target=\"_blank\"
