Celebrate and Help Save Our Iconic Native Species
Today, Sunday, 14th September 2025, Australians across the country come together to celebrate the 20th anniversary of National Bilby Day, the only officially gazetted national day dedicated to a native Australian animal. This special day recognises the incredible importance of the bilby, an iconic marsupial and a symbol of Australia’s unique biodiversity.
Why Celebrate National Bilby Day?
Bilbies are more than just a cute marsupial with floppy ears. They are ecosystem heroes that play a vital role in maintaining healthy landscapes. By digging and turning over soil, bilbies help support biodiversity and create habitats for other plants and animals.
Sadly, bilbies face serious threats from habitat loss and introduced predators such as foxes and feral cats. National Bilby Day is a reminder that without our combined efforts, the bilby could face the same fate as the extinct Tasmanian tiger.
How You Can Join in Today’s Celebration
- Go green for bilbies. Wear green, decorate your school, workplace or community, or host a picnic to show your support. Many are lighting landmarks green to raise awareness.
- Fundraise or donate. Organize bake sales, raffles, or make a donation to support on-ground bilby conservation projects.
- Share your celebration. Use hashtags #GoGreenForBilbies, #NationalBilbyDay, and #SaveTheBilbyFund to share your photos and stories on social media and inspire others.
- Host a bilby party. Dress up as bilbies and enjoy bilby-themed treats. It is a fun way to educate and engage family and friends.
